Dental Crowns
Dental crowns are a relatively common practice in cosmetic dentistry. They are essentially a cover or “cap” that are placed around an imperfect tooth. Dental crowns can be used to restore a chipped or damaged tooth, or replace one that’s missing entirely.
Dentists may use dental crowns to:
- Protect weak teeth from fractures
- Restore fractured teeth
- Replace missing teeth
- Support teeth with large fillings
- Cover discolored teeth
- Cover a dental implant
How Are Dental Crowns Made?
How Are Crowns Placed?
An initial consultation is required to discuss the goals of the patient and possible treatment plans. The tooth needing the crown will also be examined.
Then, your dentist will prepare your tooth for its crown by removing the outer layer. An impression of the tooth is created, from which the crown will be molded to perfectly cap the tooth.
A temporary crown is placed over the damaged tooth, to protect it while the permanent one is being made. Once it’s ready, your dentist will fit the new crown over the tooth, and cement it down for a permanent cover. This way, the damaged or discolored tooth will be completely covered by its perfect replica.
