Dental Implants

Losing a tooth brings a bunch of complications to your everyday life. Eating, drinking, and having a confident smile become difficult tasks. Sometimes, even the way you speak is affected. Luckily, many different technologies exist to replace missing teeth. Dental implants are one of the most secure and long-lasting options. They are becoming increasingly popular among patients with missing teeth. At Dr. Filangeri’s, we’ve been restoring smiles with the help of dental implants for years.

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants work with a tiny screw placed into the jawbone, under your missing tooth. This screw acts as an anchor for the new, artificial tooth.
Dental implants are great for many reasons. They:

  • Perfectly resemble and function like your natural teeth
  • Are sturdy enough to eat almost any type of food
  • Maintain your facial structure
  • Prevent complications like bone deterioration or shifting teeth
  • Restore your confidence
How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are placed through a surgical process. The use of a titanium screw eliminates the possibility of metal allergy among patients. Over time, the implant bonds with the jawbone. This creates a very stable foundation for the artificial tooth. Finally, the new tooth is placed over the screw with the help of small posts. This leaves patients with a replacement tooth that is just as sturdy, and aesthetically pleasing, as their original. The biggest advantage of implants is that they really do feel like your natural teeth. On top of that, adjacent teeth are completely unaffected, unlike with bridgework or other procedures.

What Is the Process of Getting Dental Implants?

First, a consultation is needed to evaluate your individual needs and discuss treatment options. X-rays and possible CT scans are required for us to get a full picture of the condition of your teeth. Candidates must have the sufficient bone density needed for the screw to hold in place. Once everything is confirmed, the first part of the procedure can begin.

A small titanium screw will be implanted into your jawbone, under the missing tooth. The screw will integrate with the bone, acting as a sturdy base for your new tooth. Once this happens, a crown is fit over the screw. It will look, feel, and act exactly like a natural tooth.

What Aftercare Habits Should I Maintain?

Dental implants are built to last permanently. With proper oral hygiene habits, they can serve patients for 20 to 30 years or even longer. It’s important to mention that some habits and outside factors can reduce their lifespan. These are:

  • Improper oral hygiene
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Radiation therapy
  • Immunodeficiency

After the implants have been inserted, recovery can take a few weeks. During this time, minor levels of pain and swelling are to be expected. The use of painkillers as instructed by your dentist, and an icepack, is recommended. Patients should stick to eating softer foods and smaller bites for the first few days. After that, they can gradually return to their normal diet. Within a few weeks, patients will be able to eat like normal. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is essential, and getting check-ups is highly recommended.
